The Museum of Natural History of the Aegean was started in 1992 with the donation of the couple Konstantinos & Maria Zimalis and the establishment of the Foundation of the same name.
Its legal form is a Non-Profit Foundation, private law (Government Gazette/Issue B/22-10-92). Its full name is MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY OF THE AEGEAN-PALEONTOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF MYTILINES OF SAMOS-KONSTANTINOU & MARIA ZIMALI FOUNDATION and it is managed by a Board of Directors.
The Museum is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and in 2006 was defined as a legal entity, which pursues cultural purposes, according to a decision of the Ministries of Economy, Finance and Culture.
The Museum collaborates and has the scientific coverage of the Universities of Athens and Thessaloniki and previously also with the University of Patras.
The building covers a covered area of 1600 square meters on three levels (workshops, exhibitions, library, offices and canteen). The surrounding area is 20 acres and is developing into a botanical garden.
